EVERETT SPRUILL
Born in Birmingham, Ala. 1954 - Everett's exposure to museums and classical music at an early age would prove to have a great influence on his artistic development. Spruill graduated in 1976 from Berea College in Kentucky where he studied Business Management. Spruill is most known for his early collages and works on paper, including his "Old School Jazz and Blues Series," which features colorful mixed-media collages of the fathers and legends of jazz, America's unique art form. For more than 35 years, Spruill has collected and created works of art. Everett is considered one of Central Florida's biggest influences on African-American Art. He designed and created art for two of Walt Disney World's Black Heritage Celebrations, seven works for The Amway Art Collection and currently conducts art workshops for central Florida youth through his non-profit arts foundation.
Artist Statement:
"My style and techniques are the result of extensive experimentation. I always focus on the importance of drawing, composition and balance, coupled with my own sense of color and design. Most of my creations begin with several thumbnail sketches to ensure the composition is just right. I try to create a dialogue with the viewers of my work using my own mixed media visual language of bold colors and rich surface textures. My images are also enhanced with cryptic patterns and handwritten social commentaries to further communicate with the viewer. My goal is to create images that are visually appealing, thought-provoking and spiritual." Everett has developed an esthetic that blends the cultures of Africa and America. Abstract mixed media compositions derived from West African masks, sculptures and symbols are the characteristics of Everett's contemporary works. In the "TRIBAL RHYTHMS" series Everett uses Egyptian papyrus, African fabrics, 50 year old African and American postage stamps and iconography to create stunning one of a kind collages. Silk-screened afro-centric patterns (E-glyphs), geometric shapes and brush strokes in brilliant color enhance his highly textured surfaces.
